From Scale to Quality: New Signals from an EV Charging Industry Conference

At the 2026 China Auto Charging-Swapping Eco Conference, officials reported 23.683 million charging points nationwide (up 41.9% YoY) and 52.4% NEV penetration. With the 15th Five-Year Plan and the new energy-system plan, the focus is shifting from 'how many piles' to 'how well they balance the grid and serve users'.

Scale Is Solved, Quality Is Next

At the 2026 China Auto Charging-Swapping Eco Conference, alliance secretary-general Zou Peng noted China reached 23.683 million charging points by July 2026, up 41.9% year on year, with NEV sales penetration at 52.4% for January to August. In major cities and on highways, 'finding a pile' is giving way to 'choosing a good pile'.

Policy Reframes the Pile

The nine-department 15th Five-Year Plan targets scaled vehicle-to-grid use, while the New Energy System Plan sets 40 million charging points and over 50 GW of virtual-power-plant capacity by 2030. Charging is now treated as a dispatchable, tradable flexibility resource inside the new power system.

What It Means Locally

The conference spotlighted highway PV-storage-charging, heavy-truck swapping, V2G and O&M quality. For Yantai, Dongshang New Energy advises building ordered charging, time-of-use metering and remote inspection into community charging now, rather than retrofitting later. Full-service models that bundle build, filing, inspection and O&M outperform scattered, owner-by-owner installs.
