Two habits that quietly shorten battery life
Many riders run the battery down to nearly empty before charging, or plug in at night and leave it connected until morning. Both feel economical and both are hard on the cells. Deep discharge stresses the chemistry at the bottom of the range; sitting at a full charge for hours, especially in summer heat, accelerates ageing at the top.
The 20-80% rule, without the jargon
Lithium cells are most comfortable circulating in the middle of their range. Keeping everyday use roughly between 20% and 80% state of charge, and only charging to 100% before a genuinely long trip, measurably extends cycle life. Top-up charging after each ride is not a problem; it is closer to ideal.
There is a second benefit that matters more than longevity: a pack that is not held at full charge under heat is a pack that is less likely to fail. Battery care is therefore also a safety topic, not only a cost topic.
Storing a battery you will not use
- Leave it around half charge rather than full or empty
- Store it away from direct sun, radiators and damp floors
- Check it every few weeks during long storage and top up if it has drifted low
Which charger protections actually matter
Not all charging equipment is equal. A compliant smart charger should cover overcharge protection, over-current protection, residual current protection with proper earthing, and temperature monitoring. Auto cut-off on full charge is the feature residents notice most: the charger stops when the battery is done instead of trickling heat into a pack all night. It is one of the clearest reasons to use a managed charging point rather than a domestic socket.
Keep it simple
