Key points in this article
Why the old model stopped working
Early operators earned mainly on the difference between purchase and sale price of electricity. That spread has narrowed as competition increased, and it was never large enough to fund serious maintenance. A model that cannot pay for uptime eventually produces sites that are down.
What replaces it
- Maintenance and management agreements with property companies and fleets
- Reporting and data services built on recorded orders
- On-site media and other value from genuine dwell time
- Inspection, battery checks and other services for the visiting driver
The common property is recurrence. Recurring revenue is earned by keeping things working, which aligns the operator's interest with the resident's for the first time.
What buyers gain
Property companies can now buy an outcome rather than a box: a site that is funded, built, maintained and reported, with a named party accountable. That is the structure of our partnership model, and it is a materially different purchase from renting hardware.
The condition that applies
Service revenue has to correspond to a real improvement. Charging for monitoring at a site that is frequently offline is not a new business model, it is an old problem with new paperwork. Residents test this quickly and remember the answer.
A healthier direction
The shift from price competition to value competition is good news for users. It means the operators who succeed are the ones who keep sites available and explain their pricing, rather than the ones who discount hardest at the start.
Questions worth asking a prospective operator
- Who funds construction, and who funds maintenance after year two
- What response time is written into the contract, not described in a brochure
- Can the property company see orders, availability and settlement directly
- What happens to the equipment if the partnership ends
These four questions take a few minutes and separate a managed service from a hardware rental very quickly. They are also the questions a good operator is happy to answer, because the answers are the substance of what is being sold.
